When I say...

  • "iTunes tells me I give this album," I mean that after I've rated all the songs on an album in iTunes, the album rating is... Not sure how iTunes does the math, but it seems to work for me. Since my ratings have more to do with how much I prefer a particular song, my rating for an album doesn't have a lot to do with how "good" I actually think album is. It has a lot more to do with how much I "enjoy" it. If there's a wide gap between the two, I may note it, but don't hold your breath. This is very different than how I rate movies which brings me to...
  • "IMDB tells me I give this movie," I mean the rating I've given that particular movie on the website imdb.com. I tend to blend how "good" I think the movie is, and how much I personally "enjoy" it. This is a whole different debate on beauty in the eye of the beholder and is there objectively good art. I say yes to both. How it works out? No idea. I'm just doing the best I can to think about both when I rate a movie.
  • "[#] stars," I mean out of a total of five stars. I usually don't rate TV show episodes or concerts unless I feel really strongly about it. Usually, movies, books, and albums are going to be what I rate most.
Clear as mud?
